DAF Trucks is preparing for series production of its new range of all-electric trucks. In anticipation, a number of vehicles have been deployed to several leading Dutch carriers. Enthusiasm prevails.
DAF was the very first European truck manufacturer to launch an all-electric truck. Since then, DAF has continued to develop as a partner in the energy transition. The number of vehicles with an electric powertrain continued to expand and their zero emission range increased enormously. In addition, the DAF dealer now supplies, among other things, a complete package of charging stations and drivers of electric trucks are offered special training courses. In 2023, DAF commissioned a brand-new assembly plant in Eindhoven for the production of electric trucks.
The New Generation DAF Electric vehicles are based on the XD and XF models that have both been named 'International Truck of the Year' and set new standards in efficiency, safety and comfort. They are available with electric motors with outputs of up to 350 kW/480 hp with a wide choice of battery packs (2 to 5 packs) for 'zero emission' ranges of up to 500 kilometers. DAF electric trucks use lithium ferrous phosphate (LFP) batteries with high energy density with advantages in thermal safety, service life and number of recharge cycles.
DAF is now gaining extensive experience with the New Generation XD and XF Electric by deploying the first vehicles in daily operation at leading
carriers. The reactions are very enthusiastic. "With our XD Electric we now drive close to 500 kilometers on a full battery charge," said Gerlof Ugema of Oegema Transport from Dedemsvaart. "By recharging once, we could reach 1,000 kilometers per day, which also offers interesting possibilities on long distances."
"We still have some challenges with the charging infrastructure on our premises but the XF Electric completely meets our expectations," assures Ewout van Wijk, CEO of E. van Wijk Logistics from Giessen. "In addition, the driver is extremely pleased with the smoothness of the truck, the silence and comfort in the cabin and the ease of driving the vehicle. There is also so much torque available immediately upon taking off."
Cornelissen Transport from Nijmegen has taken delivery of both a DAF XD and a DAF XF Electric, which will be used primarily to supply supermarkets. "First of all, these vehicles fit perfectly within our ambition to switch to emission-free transport," said Peter Leegstraten, Manager of Purchasing & Innovation. "In addition, the vehicle concept of these DAF trucks is perfect for deployment in urban areas. The large windshield, the low window lines, the second window in the door on the passenger side, and the digital cameras provide a perfect direct view and together with the electric powertrain leads to the ideal combination for us."
