Reijrink Staalconstructie has introduced the first fully reusable steel building system, called Skellet. Patented and with sales rights for the Benelux and Germany in its pocket, construction of the new division, Reijrink Skellet, began in January to enter full production in mid-March. Skellet is a kind of steel 'meccano' construction system that can be disassembled down to the smallest part. Both the profiles and connectors are completely reusable, which also maintains a high residual value. It offers endless possibilities for building circular industrial halls, mezzanine floors, homes and offices, among others.
As an industrial builder and specialist in distribution centers, Reijrink Staalconstructie may call itself the greenest steel builder in the Netherlands for many years. Director Willem Reijrink: "With the new Reijrink Skellet division, we are accelerating the development of circular solutions within the steel sector." And that there is a need for this is demonstrated by a wonderful order in Belgium to realize large industrial warehouses in Beringen entirely in Skellet construction."
Light and circular construction reduces the use of new raw materials, on the one hand, and reduces transport movements, on the other. "The Skellet system is a partial replacement of traditional hot-rolled steel. For assembly, welding can be completely omitted. Only a saw machine and a rivet gun are needed. And the modular nature of the system allows a structure to be easily modified or expanded." The value retention of Skellet profiles is underscored by the Skellet SAFE warranty. This guarantees a refund of up to 133% of the profiles' purchase price after the 15th year. Each profile is branded and digitally registered for this purpose.
Reijrink Staalconstructie can add another first to its name. Due to the great need for storage capacity combined with a shortage of building land, the first two double-story distribution centers in our country were built last year. "On behalf of an esteemed contractor, we were allowed to build the Amsterdam Logistic Cityhub with a height of 40 meters. And for another esteemed contractor the double-deck warehouse in Venlo. A different construction principle applies for such high steel structures. This is particularly challenging in terms of assembly technology. Our expertise in this contributed to our involvement in these projects."
The Environmental Cost Indicator (EQI) combines all relevant environmental effects of a product into a single score. Reijrink Staalconstructie works sustainably in many areas. It starts with the engineering where designs are made with future reuse in mind. It continues during production using sustainable steel and a production process in which 6,000 solar panels ensure that they are completely self-sufficient in their electricity needs. And it ends with a fleet of vehicles running entirely on HV100 diesel. "In addition, we offer our customers many options. For example, they can choose the Greenline coating, which is less environmentally damaging than traditional paint. If required, we can use electric cranes and aerial platforms to assemble the structures. By the way, in other cases we use machines that drive and run on HV100 diesel. We also offer the option of electric transport to the construction site." All efforts have resulted in Reijrink Staalconstructie having one of the lowest MKI scores in the Netherlands.
Reijrink Staalconstructie is not only the greenest, but also the most automated steel construction company in the Netherlands. "From assembly to complete welding, everything is done fully automatically. And from engineering to transport, we have everything in-house." The steel builder also continuously invests in technology, knowledge and people by moving with developments such as working with lean construction and Design & Build. The methodologies applied earned them the BIM Award Benelux 2018, as well as several BREEAM 'Outstanding' design certificates.
