New, more powerful engine for Volvo FH16 ensures maximum productivity

Volvo Trucks introduces a new engine for its iconic FH16 truck. With up to 780 hp and 3800 Nm, the new 17-liter engine can handle the heaviest transportation tasks with ease, while delivering excellent fuel economy and durability. The new engine is certified to run on biofuels.

Continuous driving at high speeds with heavy loads can be a challenge - but not with Volvo's new 17-liter Euro 6 engine powering the FH16. Designed for the most demanding transportation tasks, the new engine has three power levels: 600 hp, 700 hp and 780 hp. Torque has been increased to 3,000 Nm, 3,400 Nm and 3,800 Nm in the top version. The higher power and torque levels translate into faster engine response, improved driveability, maximum productivity and more efficient fuel consumption.

"I am proud to present our new engine. It is truly a masterpiece and the result of world-class engineering. The 780 hp version is the most powerful engine in the industry. When negotiating steep grades on a road with maximum load, you don't want to get stuck with too little torque and power. That's why we put all our efforts into making the D17 engine extremely powerful, reliable and responsive. For our customers, this means getting the job done faster with more fuel efficiency," said Marcos Weingaertner, Product Manager at Volvo Trucks.

The D17 engine features a single efficient turbocharger that increases engine responsiveness and enhances the driving experience. Volvo's innovative, patented wave piston design optimizes combustion and reduces emissions, while the new injection system ensures the best fuel economy and the increased peak cylinder pressure enables high power.

Engine braking power across the entire rpm range is greatly improved with excellent engine response. This enables faster shifting and results in less wear on the brake pads and disc brakes, while allowing you to go downhill more efficiently.

Certified to run on biofuels

The new D17 engine is certified for operation on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in all power ratings. The 700-hp version is also certified for 100% biodiesel (B100). The gearbox has been updated to 3,800 Nm and internal gearbox efficiency has been further improved on the 3,000 Nm and 3,400 Nm versions.

"I am convinced that customers and drivers will appreciate the engine's higher braking power and its ability to run on HVO and biodiesel. The D17 is a great engine for a great truck and all our customers who rely on the Volvo FH16 in their daily work will now have an even more powerful tool at their disposal," said Marcos Weingaertner. The sales start for the Volvo FH16 with the new engine is mid-2024. Production starts in the second half of 2024 for European markets and Australia.

The new engine is available in the all-new Volvo FH16 Aero and the latest version of the Volvo FH16.
