Volvo Trucks at IAA 2024: how new trucks and technologies contribute to zero emissions and zero accidents

Volvo Trucks' lineup at IAA 2024 demonstrates Volvo's determination to make transportation emission-free and accident-free. The booth will feature trucks with battery-electric powertrains, fuel cells and renewable fuels in internal combustion engines - a strategy that makes sustainable transportation possible today and tomorrow.

Volvo Trucks will show a global product lineup that has never been stronger at the IAA in September. The recently introduced new Volvo FH Aero range will be on display, including electric and biofuel-powered variants. Also on display will be the Volvo VNL, introduced to the U.S. market on a brand new platform, including groundbreaking autonomous technologies. The IAA is the first opportunity to experience the Volvo VNL in Europe. Both truck models were developed with a focus on fuel efficiency and safety.

"I am very eager to hear customer and media reaction to our new truck range and future technologies," said Roger Alm, President Volvo Trucks. "Our lineup at this year's IAA shows the Volvo Group's global strength and demonstrates our commitment to zero emissions and zero accidents - both equally important to our customers' success."

From the FM Low Entry to the new D17 engine

The new Volvo FM Low Entry will also be present at the IAA - this is Volvo's first truck developed solely with a battery-electric powertrain. The city truck has exceptional driver visibility to enhance safety in crowded urban areas.

The iconic Volvo FH16 Aero will be shown with the all-new and efficient 17-liter engine. This D17 engine features more power while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Designed for the toughest tasks and optimized productivity, this truck is certified for HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and B100 biodiesel.

Increase electric range with e-axis

Volvo Trucks will also showcase the new e-axle, tailored for Volvo's next-generation battery-electric and fuel-cell electric trucks. By allowing more batteries to be placed in the chassis, the e-axle enables greater electric range and optimized driving characteristics. Complementing the existing range of electric powertrains, the e-axle will be especially suitable for long-haul electric trucks.

Fuel cell trucks and hydrogen trucks with internal combustion engines

While Volvo has five years of experience with electric trucks with customers in 47 countries worldwide, hydrogen is the next step when it comes to future powertrains. Hydrogen for fuel cell applications and hydrogen in internal combustion engines (H2 ICE) are being developed in parallel to future-proof Volvo Trucks' truck range for all markets and sustainable transportation applications around the world. Both hydrogen-based technologies are expected to find their way to customers by the end of this decade.

Lower fuel consumption and improved visibility with mirror camera system CMS

Several Volvo trucks at the IAA will be equipped with Volvo's new Camera Monitor System (CMS). The mirror camera system improves aerodynamics and offers fuel economy benefits. There is also improved visibility, which enhances safety.

The Volvo lineup at the IAA includes the following eight trucks:

  • Volvo FH Aero Electric 4×2 with CMS
  • Volvo FH16 Aero 4×2 tractor on HVO, with XXL cab and CMS
  • Volvo FMX Electric 6×4 with 3-sided tipper truck
  • Volvo FM Low Entry 6×2 with skiploader system
  • Volvo FM 4×2 on (Bio-)LNG with CMS
  • Volvo FE Electric 4×2 with skiploader system
  • Volvo VNL 860, fully specified
  • Volvo's fuel cell test truck (Fuel Cell)

In addition to a wide range of truck models, Volvo will also showcase the new technologies and services in the pipeline for the next generation of trucks, including charging services for battery-electric trucks.

Visitors to IAA Transportation 2024 can find Volvo Trucks in hall 21, booth B01. Several trucks will also be available for test drives on the IAA test track. The time of Volvo Trucks' press conference will be announced later.
