Volvo Trucks scores maximum score of five stars in Euro NCAP independent safety test

European consumer testing organization Euro NCAP has assessed the safety of heavy trucks for the first time. Volvo's best-selling models, the Volvo FH Aero and the Volvo FM, both received the highest rating of five stars. The Volvo FM also had the best overall test result of all trucks tested.

The Volvo FM and Volvo FH Aero scored the maximum five stars in Euro NCAP's first truck safety assessment, which also gave both Volvo models their City Safe award.

"I am very proud of this excellent result as it confirms Volvo Trucks' leading position in safety," said Roger Alm, President Volvo Trucks. He continues: "Safety is a core value for us and a cornerstone of our heritage. Safety has been our guiding principle from the beginning of our company - and with each new product introduction we make our trucks even safer."

Euro NCAP's five-star rating means Volvo has performed excellently on criteria such as driver support and accident avoidance. This ensures greater road safety for the driver and surrounding road users. In addition, both Volvo models meet the so-called City Safe criteria, thanks to good visibility and good performance of Volvo's active safety systems, which are designed to protect vulnerable road users in city traffic situations.

"This is proof of our consistent efforts in safety developments to go beyond what is required by law, towards our vision of zero accidents with our trucks," says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks. She continues: "The Euro NCAP ratings guide customers in their purchasing decisions and challenge vehicle manufacturers to continuously work to improve safety."

Facts about Euro NCAP

The European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP), based in Belgium, was first established in 1996 and quickly became the European industry standard for assessing passenger car safety. It is supported by several European governments, including the European Union.

When the trucks are tested, each safety system is given a score, which is added up within different categories. These scores are then used to calculate a star rating of one to five stars for the entire vehicle.

The test assesses the following categories:

  • Safe driving: occupant monitoring (such as seat belt use and Driver Alert Support), visibility from the driver's seat (both direct and indirect) and driver assistance systems (such as Adaptive Cruise Control).
  • Collision prevention: head-on collisions (with a car, pedestrian or cyclist, for example), low-speed blind spot accidents, and collisions when changing lanes or turning.
  • After an accident: information for emergency services.

Euro NCAP's goal is to gradually expand the test to include passive safety systems at a later stage, as well as trucks in several specific transportation segments.
